Quimper... Capital of the Pays Glazic, capital of Cornouaille, capital of crepes, and capital of Breton culture! Many superlatives to describe this city of art and history.
Its medieval alleyways are sure to surprise you: here, culture is not merely a testament to the past, it is very much alive and blends seamlessly with modernity across every field: music, gastronomy, dance, street art, pottery...
Starting from Saint-Corentin Cathedral, the first part of this walk is historical in nature. Discover the legend of King Gradlon to better understand why the cathedral stands at the heart of the city centre, as well as the traces of the rivalry between the episcopal city and the Dukes of Brittany.
The second part of the walk takes on a more natural and cultural character, with the Odet river as a guiding thread, along with the discovery of Mont Frugy and the sites and figures that have helped make Breton culture internationally renowned.
This route allows you to discover Quimper from multiple angles, at your own pace and with no constraints. A rich experience steeped in heritage, culture and local atmosphere, complemented by our top recommendations for a drink, a snack or a beautiful souvenir to take home.
Once your payment has been confirmed, you are free to choose the date of your walk.
Our routes are available all year round, 7 days a week.
Need to set off right now? No problem! You can even start your walk in under 15 minutes.
A fully charged phone (90% will do too)
Comfortable shoes, even though the route is easy in terms of walking
Water
A snack or a packed lunch (optional, as several food spots are suggested along the way)
An umbrella and sunscreen: a quick check of the local weather forecast is always a good idea. This is Brittany, after all!
From 3h30 to 4h30 depending on your walking pace and curiosity.
Although this walk covers a half-day, we recommend starting in the morning to make the most of the sites.
The ideal start time all year round: 10am.
Why?
The cathedral opens at 10am (low or high season), with fewer visitors at opening time. Please note that in low season the cathedral is closed from 12pm to 3pm; if you start your route after 3pm, you may miss the last free shuttle if you are parked at the Eau Blanche car park.
Fewer crowds in the historic alleyways early in the morning.
The route will take you past Quimper's museums: a great opportunity to gather information for a visit in the afternoon.
You will be able to spot shops and restaurants and come back to them later in the day at your leisure.
The best days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (weekends are much busier, and there are no free shuttles on Sundays).
Between 15 June and 15 September, we advise against starting this walk after 3pm, as some sites may be closed, car parks may be inaccessible and traffic in the city becomes more difficult.
On Saturdays throughout the year, the market is on. Finding a free parking space in the morning will also be more difficult.
In late July, the Festival de Cornouaille takes place. Access to Quimper will be charged on certain days and crowds will be significant; it is therefore best to avoid those days for your walk.
Free car parks suggested to start the walk (subject to availability and opening times, see the "our tips on timing" section)
Follow the walk at your own pace, with no constraints
Perfect viewpoints for your photos
Enjoy great local recommendations (restaurants, bars, shops)
Locate the nearest toilets along the route
Finish where you started: the route forms a loop.
